Overview

Clever Pequeña Tsao has the solution to the problem perplexing her elders.  Her biggest problem is getting them to listen her!  This tale is set in ancient China, but the little girl’s solution contains a timeless mathematical concept.  Timeless, too, is the satisfaction children take in reading a tale where a child triumphs over those who are meant to be more knowledgeable.

Purpose

This folk tale provides excellent reading for students who have well-developed decoding skills and are less reliant on picture cues for meaning.  The book could be used as part of a math unit or within a social studies unit on China.

Setting the scene

Look at the cover illustration and discuss the ancient Chinese setting.

Ask why someone might want to weigh an elephant and how the characters in the story could go about it.  Introduce the math vocabulary that
children will meet in the text and write up the names Tsao Tsao and Pequeña Tsao.
