Overview
This procedural text presents a method for constructing patchwork squares and putting them together to make a paper patchwork quilt. Clear instructions use the imperative form of the verb and reinforce the idea of sequence with a clear picture/text match. The finale encourages children to work cooperatively in a manner that echoes traditional American quilting bees.
Purpose
This book offers the chance to study a procedural text in a math context, or as part of a social studies theme, looking at the place of quilting in United States domestic history.
Setting the scene
Most children delight in making things, either alone or together, or will have watched a family member make something. Open discussion by asking who has made or seen something made recently, what materials were used, and how they knew what to do. Then look at the cover.
- ¿Qué tiene esta niña en sus manos?
Read the cover text to the group.
- ¿De qué material creen que está hecha esta colcha?
- ¿De qué material se hace normalmente una colcha?
- ¿Alguien ha hecho una colcha alguna vez?
Explain that this story tells how to measure squares and triangles and how to put them together to make a paper patchwork quilt.
