Overview

This book features a trip to the market in a small Mexican village.  Children who are immigrants, or have parents who are immigrants, will relate to the story and to the rich illustrations.  A twist at the end, in which the characters take an interesting ride, amuses and engages the reader.  Many commonly purchased foods are featured in the text and are easily identifi ed in the illustrations.

Purpose

This shopping excursion can be used as a basis upon which the children can create their own shopping lists.  Regional variations of words for
fruits and vegetables can be discussed, as well as the long list of words with the letter “p.”

Setting the scene

Discuss how the students go shopping.

• ¿Van con su mamá o su papá?
• ¿Van con otras personas?
• ¿Les gusta ir de compras?

Read the cover text with the class.
