Overview

This is an informational text describing the hunting technique of the heron.  The photographs give the reader a lot of additional information about the two main characters.  The text is brief and nonrepetitive, requiring the reader to cross-check using a range of cues from meaning, photographs, and letter-sound relationships.

Purpose

The purpose for reading could be to gather information about the habits and habitat of the two animals in the story.  There are also a range of verbs to study in context.  The book gives children practice in interpreting the additional information provided by the clear-cut images of the crab.
