Setting the Scene

Tell the students that they will have learned a great deal about criminal investigation by the time they have finished reading this issue.  To help set
the scene for the magazine’s theme, ask questions such as the following:

• When you hear the term “crime investigations,” what is the first thing that comes to mind?
• Where have you seen or heard of criminal investigations?

Making Connections

Explain to the students that this magazine looks at different ways of investigating crime, including tools of the trade, historical and current.  Ask questions such as the following:

• What do you know about investigating crime?
• What different government agencies investigate crime?
• Which professions are involved in solving crime?

Point out that people have written about crime for a very long time.  Ask questions such as the following:

• What authors do you know who specialize in writing about crime?
• Do they write fiction or nonfiction?
• Do you have a favorite? Who? Why?
