Introducing the Magazine
Setting the Scene
Tell the students that this issue of High Wire Magazine is about cars, driving, and people’s jobs and interests that revolve around cars. Ask them to share the images that come to mind when they hear the word “drive.” Discuss the issues surrounding cars and car use. Encourage the students to talk about the problems the world will face as supplies of fossil fuels decrease. Invite the students to suggest ideas for solving these problems.
Making Connections
Explain that there are people who use cars for more than just getting from one place to another. Ask questions such as the following:
- What sorts of jobs would involve fast-moving cars?
- What would attract someone to this kind of job?
- Does this kind of job appeal to you? Why/why not?
Have the students look at the cover and consider what the content might be. Ask:
- What is happening on the cover?
- Does it give you any clues as to what you will be reading about in this magazine?
