Overview
The Chinese New Year is a time of celebration. This story looks at how a mother and her son do a number of simple tasks to prepare for the New Year. The photographs show the happiness and expectation of the young boy. It will help the group’s orientation if you introduce some of the concepts and vocabulary before you begin the session.
Purpose
This book could be used as a part of a study of celebrations and the preparation needed for them. It provides an opportunity to discuss the change from the “nosotros” to the “yo” verb form.
Setting the scene
Talk with the group about celebrations.
- ¿En qué partes del año tenemos celebraciones?
Encourage them to talk about the activities, food, special clothing, or presents that these involve. Ask if anyone knows about New Year’s Day.
- ¿Qué celebran ustedes en ese día?
Discuss the cover photograph and read the title.
- ¿Qué tiene la señora en su mano?
Because the traditional Chinese calendar is lunar, the New Year usually falls between mid-January and mid-February. Dumplings are just one of the special foods prepared at this time. The red envelopes contain new coins from grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Traditionally, the lanterns were to scare off bad things so that the New Year could begin happily.
