Overview

In this story, a young girl constructs a cardboard boat and takes it to the water to see if it will float.  While each page contains only two words of text, the narrative structure remains well intact with the support of the photographs.  The plan on the inside back cover shows readers how to make a boat of their own.

Purpose

This is an ideal book to read as part of a study on flotation.  It gives the students the opportunity to follow written instructions and interpret a diagram.  It could also be used as part of a theme on water or beach recreation.

Setting the scene

Depending upon the school’s proximity to the beach and the purpose of reading, the discussion could open with either talk about going to the
beach or the students’ experience and knowledge of flotation.

Read the title and the names of the author and photographer to the group.
