Overview

In this story, a young boy compares the experience of watching soccer in a small town in his old country with that of watching football in a city in his new country, the United States.  The book design subtly echoes the theme of change as the text placement varies from page to page.  The nonrepetitive text requires that the reader pay close attention to detail.  The book will have special appeal to children interested in sports.

Purpose

This book is ideal to use with children who have experienced a change of country as it helps them to realize that, although life may be different in both places, each can be enjoyed on its own terms.  It provides practice in identifying letter blends and plurals, and introduces the idea of “flashbacks.”  It could be used within a unit about sports.

Setting the scene
