Overview
El tío José is a book full of fun. Hugging Uncle José is like hugging a bear! An inquisitive group of children want to know why Uncle José is so big. He does give them an answer, but not the one they expect. This is a good example of a narrative in the present tense.
Purpose
El tío José is a story that is built on anticipation. Wanting to know the answer to the question posed at the beginning of the story will sustain the
readers’ efforts to get meaning from the text. This is a good example of a short narrative based on humor, and it will give students the chance to work with a range of vocabulary and print conventions, everyday language, and a simile.
Setting the scene
Discuss uncles and aunts. Look at the cover of the book and read the title.
- ¿Quién es este personaje?
- ¿Cómo lo describirían ustedes?
- ¿Por qué creen que es tan gordo él?
Discuss all the students’ suggestions with care.
