Overview

In this story, all the characters are animals with human traits, including the ability to talk.  The text is largely direct speech in the form of questions. A talking point will be the three-dimensional appearance of the paper collage illustrations.

Purpose

The students could read this book to further develop cross-checking strategies using a range of cues.  There is an opportunity to focus on the
frequent use of the question form and direct quotes, as well as discussing the artist’s craft.

Setting the scene

Introduce the book by talking about farm animals.

  • ¿Piensan ustedes que los animales necesitan amigos?
  • ¿Podrían ser buenos amigos un perro y una oveja?

Discuss the cover illustration.

  • ¿Por qué está llorando el toro?

Read the title and cover information together.  Talk about what it means to be lonely.
