Overview

This is a narrative text describing the life cycle of the poppy – from bud-burst to the sprouting of new seeds.  The text uses specialized vocabulary, such as polen, cajita de semillas, and pétalos, but this is strongly supported by the sequential structure of the text and colorful, close-up photographs.  These vivid photographs will encourage readers to look for details in real life.

Purpose

The students could read this book as part of a plant or seasonal study.  It is a good model of descriptive writing in a personal style.  It provides an example of a diagram used as the summary of a story.

Setting the scene

Talk to the students about any plants that have been grown in the classroom.  If you have not yet planted seeds as an activity, have some ready to show the group and discuss what will happen to them when they are planted.
