Overview

This traditional Mayan story is retold so that students at the fl uent stage of reading development can be exposed to the rich genre of folk tales. The text has a simple sentence structure that supports the reader, yet it uses book language.  Children will enjoy reading this tale about a Mayan princess, her humble suitor, and the origins of the Mayan flute.

Purpose

This story would be ideal for developing the students’ understanding of descriptive book language.  It could be tied in with a music unit or
could lead into study of other traditional tales, ideally from the children’s own backgrounds.
