Overview
This challenging, short text takes the form of a poem expressing a child’s view of the city as he and his mother walk home. Floyd Cooper’s evocative, sensitive pictures portray the sights expressed in the poem. The text will require good use of word-attack skills to solve the meanings of the nonrepetitive nouns and verbs.
Purpose
This text will give students the experience of reading a poem that is both expressive and evocative, but within many children’s experience.
Setting the scene
Talk about the kinds of things that children are used to seeing in the city and how they feel about living there. Children will notice different features, so allow plenty of time to discuss these. Read the cover text and look at the illustration. Explain that this is a poem about what one boy sees and how he feels in the city.
