Overview

This is a simple, rhythmic text about the pastime of skipping stones.  The narrator tells how she, Marilú, and Juan choose the best stones to skip. The text is cumulative and uses the sounds of the stones on the water to add momentum to the story line.

Purpose

This is a text that capitalizes on children’s enjoyment of sound and rhythm while validating their out-of-school experiences.  Children may enjoy recalling other chants they have invented when carrying out a particular activity.  The story could be used in a physical education program, a music unit where rhythm is being considered, or in the language arts program.

Setting the scene

Ask if anyone has spent time by a river or lake.

Show the children a selection of stones.
