Overview

This story focuses on all the things the main character can do in his wheelchair.  There is a strong element of repetition in the text, and Marjorie Scott’s illustrations capture the movement of the story line and provide strong clues to meaning.  The story shows a young boy with a physical disability in a very positive context.

Purpose

The text and illustrations in this story will mean a successful read for most students.  The book could be used as part of a unit on sport or
physical activity, or when discussing people with disabilities.  It introduces a range of simple verbs in a meaningful way.

Setting the scene

Ask if anyone has a friend or family member who uses a wheelchair.

• ¿Cómo llegan ustedes a la escuela?
• ¿Conocen a algún niño que use una silla de ruedas?

If you have a child at your school using a wheel-chair, this might be a good time to invite them to talk to the class or to answer their questions.
Read the cover page text to the group.  Explain that this story tells us about some of the things the boy can do in his chair.
