Overview
This is a young boy’s simple account of the daily routine of removing his father’s boots. This special job enhances the boy’s self-esteem and expresses the close relationships of this Hispanic family. The text relates directly to the very warm illustrations, providing a secure reading experience for the newly independent reader.
Purpose
This story could be used to introduce the reader to new elements of book language – a simple simile and the reference to the past, which involves a change of tense, on the final page. By drawing on children’s own experiences, the story could be used as part of a unit on families and traditions.
Setting the scene
Many children have special family jobs and easily identify with this idea. Some of these jobs will involve an element of play, as this one does.
Read the cover text to the group.
