Overview

In this nonfiction book, a girl describes a whale watching trip with her father. The story provides information about the gray whales that can be seen along the Californian coast.  It includes photographs of the girl and her father on the boat, close-up shots of gray whales, and a map.

Purpose

Mirando ballenas may be used to highlight students’ interest in whales or to discuss a trip they may have taken with a family member.  Children who live by the coast and have gone whale watching could compare the text with their own experiences.  The book could lead into further study of gray whales or other scientific themes.
