Introducing the Magazine

Setting the Scene

Tell the students that this issue of High Wire Magazine is about the many forms of movement.  Ask them to share the images that come to mind when they hear the words “move it.”  Ask questions such as the following:

  • Move, moving, and movement have different meanings depending on the context.  What meanings can you think of? (List the students’
    responses on the board.)
  • What do the words “move it” make you think of? What mental images do you have?
  • What might the readings be about?

Making Connections

Explain that the magazine includes everything from extreme sports to emergency situations. Ask:

  • Does this change the mental image you experience when you hear the words “move it”?
  • What do you know about extreme sports?

Have the students look at the cover and consider what the content might be. Ask:

  • What is happening on the cover?
  • Does it give you any further clues as to what you will be reading?
