Overview

This is a book that combines elements of realism and fantasy.  The story focuses on a group of children constructing a rocket and, in particular, on the way they join the materials together.  The two younger children have help from an older friend. The story is in the form of a simple poem.

Purpose

This book shows children working together towards a common goal.  It could be read to introduce the children to the specific verbs used in
the story, to show the process of construction, or as a model for the children’s own work with this form of writing.

Setting the scene

Talk with the group about models they have made – a car or an airplane, for example.

Encourage the group to talk about the materials and processes they used to make their model.  Look at the cover and discuss the photograph.
