Overview
This is a narrative text written in a conversational style. Juan is five and is still learning to talk – he finds it very difficult to remember the words he wants to use. In the supportive family setting, Juan displays a variety of behaviors as he chooses the place for a picnic and tries to tell Mom and Dad. The reader feels a gentle humor as Juan attempts to hurry his parents.
Purpose
Students could read this text to appreciate the difficulty that children with disabilities can encounter and how they can be supported to overcome them. The text also encourages problem-solving behavior and could be used to focus on speech punctuation and past-tense verbs.
Setting the scene
Discuss the children’s experiences with people who have disabilities. Talk about the things that children can do for themselves and the things they need help with. Discuss times when students in the group have experienced frustration trying to communicate, and find out how they overcame these problems. Tell them that this book is about a boy who has a disability and is learning to talk. Read the cover text and discuss the illustration.
- ¿Quiénes creen ustedes que están aquí?
- ¿Qué le sucede al papá? ¿Por qué se estará cepillando los dientes en la cama?
