Overview
In this folk tale from South Carolina, a tiny mouse uses its wits to escape from a hungry cat. The text exhibits some classic features of the folk tale, including a timeless opening and a tricky character who thinks of a clever resolution to a problem. There is limited use of direct speech, making this a good book to use with students who are just becoming familiar with the conventions of speech in text.
Purpose
The illustrations are good visual prompts to help children practice the skill of retelling the story. This title could be used to introduce the idea of folk tales and “book language.” It would be an interesting addition to a unit encouraging problem-solving skills, where children are being encouraged to think of a variety of solutions to the same problem.
Setting the scene
Read the title and discuss the cover illustration.
- ¿Qué está haciendo el gato?
- ¿Por qué estará el ratón mirando el gato?
Explain that sometimes stories tell us reasons for things being the way they are, often using two characters, one clever and one silly. Point out the words cuento tradicional in the cover text.
- ¿Qué nos dirá este cuento tradicional?
- ¿Creen ustedes que es un cuento real?
