Overview

Puedo leer allows the new reader to experience a high degree of independent success.  There is a strong element of repetition in the text and a close picture/text match.  The illustrations show reading as an enjoyable activity, with family and friends being involved.

Purpose

This book offers strong support through the repetitive element in the text.  The clear spacing gives the children the opportunity to point to each word as they read, reinforcing the idea of separate units.  The story offers strong messages about the positive rewards of reading.

Setting the scene

Most new readers will be discovering the joy of rereading simple books to their friends and families.  Open the discussion by asking who they like to read to, and perhaps talk about their favorite books.  Look at the cover.

  • ¿A quién creen que está leyendo la niña?

Read the cover text to the group.

  • ¿Cuándo leen ustedes?
  • ¿Qué tipo de cuentos les gusta leer?
  • ¿Leen a sus hermanos?
  • ¿A quién les gusta más leerle?

Explain that the story tells us about some of the people this girl likes to read to.
