Overview

This is a true account of a family trip to pay a surprise visit to Grandfather Pedro in the jungles of Perú.  The text features descriptive language and repetition to convey the long journey.  Students will relate to the boy’s joy in seeing his grandfather and to his excitement when exploring the jungle habitat.  The rich illustrations support the text well.

Purpose

This book takes children on an adventure which may be very new to them. It introduces them to the travel genre and could lead into a discussion of the different kinds of home environments that children in the class have lived in.  The students will be able to compare the animals and plants they see to ones they are familiar with.

Setting the scene

Discuss the cover photograph and title of the book.
