Overview

This story revolves around differences in culture.  It portrays the humor involved when a non-Hispanic child tries to understand how someone could eat a prickly cactus – nopal.  Imagination bubbles give insight into what the character is thinking and make the text and joke more understandable.  A play on words relates to how nopales are eaten, and a flow diagram shows how the cactus paddles are prepared for eating.  (Note that, although accurate, this is not intended to be a recipe for children to try.)

Purpose

This text could be used to help children follow a question-response format in the form of a good joke.  The use of como and cómo encourages
children to read closely for understanding and can lead into a discussion of double meanings.

Setting the scene

Have the children look at the cover of their book.
