About the Presenters

Yvonne S. Freeman, Ph.D., and David E. Freeman, Ph.D., are leading experts in literacy education for English language learners. Yvonne is a professor of bilingual education, and David- a professor of reading at the University of Texas at Brownsville. They continue to work with educators around the country and present regularly at international, national and state conferences on topics of second-language teaching, bilingual education, and second-language acquisition.

They are the co-authors of numerous books, including La ensenanza de la lectura y la escritura en espanol y ingles en salones de clases bilingues y de doble inmersion, segunda edición revisada (2009), Academic Language for English Language Learners and Struggling Readers (2008), Diverse Learners in the Mainstream Classroom (2008), Teaching Reading and Writing in Spanish and English in Bilingual and Dual Language Classrooms, Second Edition (2006), and Dual Language Essentials for Teachers and Administrators (2004).

About the Presenter

David Booth is a renowned educator and Professor Emeritus in Education and Coordinator of the Pre-Service Elementary program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto. He has been involved in education for more than 40 years, has taught children and teachers, and is one of the leading experts on literacy in North America. He is well known as an international speaker, having worked with teachers and administrators throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and Asia.

David has authored many teacher reference books and textbooks in all areas of language development: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. His publications include Boosting Literacy with Graphic Novels (2006), I Want to Read! Reading, Writing, and Really Learning (2004), Even Hockey Players Read (2000), Literacy Techniques for Building Successful Readers and Writers (2004), Reading Doesn't Matter Anymore (2006), and The Literacy Principal, Second Edition (2007).

About the Presenter

Michael Opitz, Ph.D., is a professor of elementary education at the University of Northern Colorado and the winner of its Outstanding Scholar Award in the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. A former elementary teacher and reading specialist, Michael continues to work in classrooms throughout the U.S. and abroad. He is a highly sought-after speaker who is recognized for his practical approach to literacy instruction.

He is the author of several books, including the newly released, Comprehension and English Language Learners (2009). Other books include Flexible Grouping in Reading(1998), and Literacy Instruction for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (1998), Good-bye Round Robin, Updated Edition (2008), Do-able Differentiation (2008), Books & Beyond (2007), Listen Hear!
